2022 Colt Python - After more than twenty years of production, in 2020 Colt relaunched its famous Python revolver with two barrel length options - 4.25 inches and 6 inches. However, collectors still wanted the 3-inch model. The wait is officially over - Colt has announced the return to production of the 3-inch Python.

Like all Colt Pythons, the 3-inch version is chambered for the powerful .357 Magnum and has a 6-round barrel. Aesthetically, the new Python models resemble the original revolvers. Its stainless steel barrel and frame feature a walnut grip. The shape of the handle, deep check and the gold Colt logo are reminiscent of classics. Its upper strap and its entire sole remain unchanged from the original.

I don't mean the heat from burning smokeless powder - I mean the actual heat you feel when you pick it up. When you face a gun in heat, it's unbearable. That's exactly how I got my hands on the Python blades.

I'm not a sniper. I've used and carried a lot in Alaska and even shot a couple bears with them - but I know how bad guns are. But, when I picked up Colt's newest Python model: the 3-inch Python, I had a hard time resisting the snake's magic. My eyes see guns as tools, but I can't help but feel like I'm holding something special as I wipe away the rusted fingerprints before turning the shiny new gun into my hand. and put it in its box.

The Colt Python relaunch in 2022 is old news, but the 3-inch model didn't return to production until the right now. This compact version of the .357 Magnum revolver promises to bring the look, feel and substance of the original to a more powerful frame. Few expectations are more difficult to meet than the norm, and this new Colt has plenty to live up to.

I have used and tested many guns, and my first impressions have always been negative. But my first impression is that the new Python 3-inch is a very good product. These simple, clean and fully integrated walnut grips feel great in the hand. Everything about this new Python suggested accuracy and efficiency. I don't have an original Python to compare it to, but the Ruger GP100 .357 Magnum has served me well as a good revolver with a good profile.

The fit, finish and attention to detail on the new 3-inch Python are excellent. Operation of the button and trigger is buttery smooth, and the lock-in feel is satisfying. A narrow light line is visible between the barrel and the barrel, and the barrel has only a small horizontal play. When the trigger is pulled and the hammer is lowered - full lock - there is no noticeable play in the barrel. I have seen some new guns with so much game that I was afraid to shoot them. Even my Ruger GP100 has significant play with the trigger when it is fully locked.

Almost all parts of the Python 3" fit better and work better than the same parts on my GP100 when new. My GP100 has seen years of hard use and lots of drilling but is in good condition. very good. The tip of the ejector metal is perfectly rounded and the fit between the top of the tube and the frame is very tight - creating an almost invisible seam when close. The other seams on the frame are of the same arrangement.

The new 3-inch Python is fresh and uncomplicated. It features the lines and other features that shooters love about the original Python, including a full stock and a cool top barrel. . The bezel uses the same shape but is stainless steel. Colt says they were able to increase the amount of steel in the frame by 30 percent, especially in the rear.

As the name suggests, the barrel is 3 inches long and is finished with a clear filter crown. Like other Python examples, the revolver can be used as two-action and one-action, and uses a transfer principle. Common on modern cars, the transfer bar allows the hammer to contact the firing pin but drop when the trigger is released. This allows the revolver to be carried with a fully loaded cartridge, as a blow of the hammer will cause it to go off suddenly.

The new Python includes an adjustable rear sight with a 3-inch display and height adjustment, as well as a locking mechanism. Although it is chambered in .357 Magnum, it is compatible with .38 Special cartridges. If you find that the rear doesn't have as much movement at the height you need, you can swap out the front light line for one at a different height.

Bad things and temptations can only bring a gun, and the most important thing about the Python 3-inch is the quality of its action and gun. I don't need a $1400 gun just to look - the gun has to pull its weight. In line, I compared the 3-inch Python to the reliable GP100. I shot 200 rounds of 158-grain Black Hills Ammo JHP and an additional box of 50 Winchester .38 Special FMJ loads.

The Python 3 inch trigger is amazing. The pressure exerted on the double pull is a bit more than what my Lyman scale would record. However, he always broke 5 pounds, 7 ounces in one shot with the hammer. My GP100 trigger breaks at 4 pounds, 15 ounces in a single action, but the Colt's double action trigger pull is much smoother than my Ruger. The overall weight of the double action can be heavy, but the Colt's pull cycle is very smooth and resistant to breaking. My GP100 doesn't have the same cycle: starts strong, smooths out, hardens again before breaking. In one action, the Python 3-inch trigger pull is a direct break with almost no recovery.

The recoil of the short-barreled Python is characterized by the full power .357 Magnum load. With a two-handed grip, it's a bit awkward, but manageable. I know the most frustrating thing is in my fingers. When shooting, it returns to the thumb of my support hand. The return of the controller is one of the features on the front of my GP100 in Python. It has a longer 4.2-inch barrel and a more comfortable leather grip. The Python is shown moving in an upward direction, and the GP100 controls the movement by hand. With practice, I was able to use the Python comfortably while shooting at high velocities, and when using the .38 Special loads, it was an absolute joy to shoot.

I didn't expect the Python to be a 3 inch revolver, but I found the accuracy to be good for a short barrel. From a support position at 50 feet, I averaged 1.8-inch 6-shot groups with the Black Hills load.
