C 5a Aircraft - As the Air Force's largest and only strategic carrier, the C-5 Galaxy can carry more payload farther than any other aircraft. With a payload of six Mine Resistant Ambush Vehicles (MRAPs) or up to five helicopters, the C-5 can carry twice the payload of other airlifts.
The modernization of the C-5 provides greatly improved reliability, efficiency, maintainability and availability, while ensuring that this critical national strategic air train asset continues to serve the warfighter well into the 21st century.
C 5a Aircraft
Since its inception, the C-5 has been an essential instrument of national policy. From the defense of Israel in the Yom Kippur War, to the airlift supporting coalition forces in Desert Storm, the C-5 provides an unparalleled ability to transport massive payloads over global distances.

C-5's modernization approach is proven. In three flights operating from Dover AFB, Delaware, the US Air Force and Lockheed Martin team set 43 world aviation records, demonstrating the C-5M's ability to redefine global air transportation. In deployed airlift operations, the C-5M heralds a new era of highly capable, reliable and affordable airlifts. With exit reliability rates of more than 90 percent and a 20 percent payload increase over legacy C-5s, the Galaxy Super delivers more to the warfighter in every mission. With a significant improvement in refueling range, the C-5M bypasses traditional refueling stops in transit, allowing fuel consumption to be reduced by 20 percent. That's the OEM difference. On October 24, 1974, the US Air Force successfully conducted a Mobile Air Feasibility Test when C-5A Galaxy 69-0014 (this plane!) dropped an 86,000 lb Intercontinental Minuteman Ballistic (ICBM) from 20,000 feet over the Pacific Ocean. The missile soared to 8,000 feet under a parachute before firing its rocket engine. The 10-second engine burn carried the missile to 20,000 feet again before plunging into the sea. The test proved the feasibility of launching an ICBM from the air. However, due to engineering and security difficulties, the program In the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT), the capability was used as a bargaining chip.
In 1973, 69-0014 was the first new factory C-5A assigned to Dover AFB, Delaware, and on October 20, 2013 it moved to the AMC Museum marking the first time a C-5 retired to a museum.

The C-5 entered operational service in 1970 and has been a vital asset in every military operation since that time, including the Vietnam War, Desert Storm, and Operation Enduring Freedom. He was also instrumental in humanitarian relief efforts, including Hurricane Katrina and tsunami and earthquake relief. With a service life that extends beyond 2040, the C-5 will remain a central figure in strategic airlift for years to come.
